About Mr Joe Horner FCS(SA) FRCS, the surgeon

Mr Joe Horner is a General and Laparoscopic Surgeon, formerly Consultant Surgeon at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital, Middlesex.

He trained in the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town South Africa, and at St Mary’s Hospital Paddington London W2 .

Mr Horner developed and pioneered laparoscopic surgery at Ashford Hospital Middlesex in 1990, after training with Dr Joe Petelin, in Kansas USA.

He specializes in upper gastro-intestinal laproscopic surgery, and his experience in laparoscopic surgery is in excess of 4000 procedures.

In 2003, Mr Horner created the Gastric Banding Service at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital, and has undertaken many hundreds of laparoscopic banding procedures for the condition of morbid obesity.

He has trained internationally in obesity units; in Melbourne Australia with Dr George Fielding, in Hallein Austria with Dr Karl Miller, in Alcoy Spain with Dr Aniceto Baltazar, and in Lyon with Dr Vincent Frering.

The most frequent procedures he undertakes are laparoscopic gastric banding, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. He also undertakes advanced laparoscopic procedures, such as hiatus hernia surgery, and laparoscopic bile duct surgery for gallstone disease.

Mr Horner has developed a significant expertise in the laparoscopic repair of incisional hernia.

Mr Horner regularly teaches at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in MATTU courses (Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit).

He is a founder member of the British Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons, and is also a member of BOMSS (British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society) and BOSPA (British Obesity Surgery Patient Association).
